Indoor Pests

January 16th, 2019

We have lots of insects in this house, the ladybugs, the flies, this winter mosquitoes, and of course the stink bugs.

I don’t know which one is the worst, probably the ladybugs in the spring when they come out by what seems like the millions. Either way, it’s a constant battle to sweep them up and keep them from getting into everything.

Do you have stinkbugs, ladybugs, flies, or other type of house pest?

Jack Frost Nipping

January 15th, 2019

My office windows are sometimes covered with the most intricately beautiful frost. The patterns are mesmerizing. I’m not sure what the exact conditions are that cause this particular type of frost, some mornings they’re just covered with the white sheet of frost, but every now and then I get this:

Winter brings such beauty and wonder, I find myself noticing all the beauty that comes with this frigid season!

Winter Sunsets

January 14th, 2019

During the winter, the sunsets are typically stunning. I’m not sure why they seem so much prettier, maybe it has something to do with the fact that we can see more of the sky in the west when the leaves are off the trees? Maybe it has something to do with the sun setting so early? Perhaps it’s just something about the atmosphere during the winter months. The other evening, I was working in my office and noticed this view out the window.

Funny enough, while I was taking photos, Mr Chiots texted me and said “Did you see the sunset? It’s amazing this evening!”

Do you find yourself noticing different things in different seasons?

Gardens in Israel

January 10th, 2019

When Mr Chiots and I were in Israel back in November, we visited a few different kibbutzes. The one we spent the most time at (Gal-On) had lovely plantings fill with lush tropical plants. Here are a few photos from a walk I took around the grounds.

The gardens and plants reminded me a lot of Colombia (where I grew up), in fact there were many of the same plants. It was much different than Maine, that difference was highlighted since we traveled after the gardens had gone dormant here. There was a definite tropical feel to the plants and gardens. I also was able to tour one of the larger agricultural kibbutzes with citrus groves, avocados, pomegranates, and so many other wonderful things. I’ll share photos of that next week.

Do you try to get out into the non-tourist places when you travel?

Chipping Away

January 9th, 2019

We’ve always had a deep freezer filled with garden goodness and meat from purchasing animals from farmers or from hunting. Typically we eat through the freezer in the winter, but sometimes things get pushed to the back or the bottom and are forgotten. I neglected to clean/defrost the freezers this past summer so there are some thing in there that need eaten ASAP. It needs done before I start putting things in this coming summer. One of my goals was to eat through everything in the freezer, so far we’ve been doing quite well.

As of this morning, I have 8 empty freezer bags. Most of them were filled with broccoli and green beans from this summer’s garden. Currently, I’m making a batch of strawberry rhubarb compote to put in the bottom of a batch of yogurt I’m making. I also have a batch of semolina bread retarding in the fridge using up some durum flour from the freezer. No doubt in the future we will be enjoying some fairly eclectic meals (as will with chickens depending on what is found in the bottom of the chest freezer).

How do you manage your deep freezer if you have one?
