Snowed In

February 7th, 2010

I’m sure many of you got the same winter storm we got hit with on Friday/Saturday. It started snowing around noon on Friday and didn’t stop until about noon on Saturday. We don’t generally get this much snow at once here in these parts of Ohio. It was a heavy wet sticky snow, so everything was covered in snow. The side of our garage was plastered, as was the house and all the trees.

Since we had a meeting in Cleveland yesterday evening, we had to dig ourselves out. So we bundled up and headed out to shovel the driveway.

This is what we saw, we had to start shoveling from inside (and we have a step up into our house).

We still like to shovel our driveway, instead of a snow blower. It’s like raking leaves, a great reason to get out on a beautiful day and a great workout (keeps those gardening muscles in shape)! We only have one snow shovel, so I had to use my gardening shovel. We ended up with 14-18 inches of snow, we measured here between our house and garage which is a bit sheltered. My mom who lives an hour northwest of us, got around 8 inches. In Pittsburgh, about an hour and half east of us, they had almost two feet of snow.

We’re loving this snow! The sun came out yesterday afternoon and it was just beautiful. I was hoping to head out and take some photos, but after two and a half hours shoveling I was a bit tired.

Did you get hit with the winter storm?

We certainly haven’t gotten any snow, but it has been mighty cold here in Florida this year. It keeps fluctuating between hot and cold, but on the extremes of either end. The weather should be warm enough to set out our summer veggies by the end of this month.

Nope, not a single flake here in CT. The weather person was talking on Friday about some sort of “barrier” front that is keeping things smooshed below Long Island in a kind of arc. I’ve heard about all the accumulations down in the WV, DC, and MD area though – astounding. They did get hit hard with a couple of storms this year, even though the supposedly snowy northeast seems to have escaped much of it. I can see the (dead-looking) grass outside my window, so looking at your pictures is in some way delightful to see. But since I’m not a snow/winter person, it seems for the best – the snow is beautiful to look at, but for me, hard to actually have in my area.

I love snow, until we lose power. Then, not so much. And in Tennessee, we really fall apart with more than three inches, heck we fall apart with a dusting.

Yes, we often lose power in these kinds of storms. We’re part of a small electric co-op so they don’t have the man-power a huge company has. One good reason to have a backup heater that requires no electric to run.

Um, if winter storm means a light cold front that made temp’s in the 60’s…then yeah!! ;) Enjoy your snow!

I didn’t get hit here in WNY (we had snow, but it was light and fluffy and little accumulation). It actually very pretty, I just wish it would be above 15 out so the girls could go skiing. Otherwise its an 1.5 hours to get there for maybe an hour of skiing. They have all the warm gear, but not the face masks (because S wears glasses) and without the face masks they get bitter cold on the mountain. The last couple of years have been lousy ski weather for little one (for adults its great), but for the little ones who need it just a tad warmer (or atleast without windchill) its been aweful.
Oh well, I guess I will look in the clearance for the ski masks so they can ski next year regardless of the weather, it also means I am going to have to go along and sit in what passes for a lodge there, with my book and hot cocoa so that cold little ones can come in while the adults ski and play.

We got just enough snow to cover the grass and cars, but not enough to stick on the road. Thank goodness! We had over 6 inches last weekend (which is a lot for an area that only gets snow about once every 5 years.)

LOVE the snow! Thanks for sharing your wonderful ‘shovel out from inside” shots. it makes me feel all cozy and warm. Make sense? I know it does to you. Have a beautiful day!

I no longer live where it snows. Some winters I miss that, but not usually. Your photos are simply wonderful, beautiful shots. If we do get a bit of snow here, and it has happened more so in recent years, it pretty much shuts down our little world. I get around fine, but others not so much.

Every time I see these pictures I can’t get over how much you guys in the east are getting pummelled by the snow! It’s the complete polar opposite here on the west, and in fact I even have irises and perennials starting to come up (a good two months earlier then normal). I’m usually the one with 2ft of snow and well below freezing temperatures. It’s like our weather got diverted to you!

We had 21 inches here (we are a bit North of Pittsburgh) on the yard stick in the back yard. Although, the snow was over my knees in the hives / orchard so that would be about 2 feet. Still shoveling.. Pictures later. Need to dig a path for the chickens! Thinking of you too! Keep warm and don’t shovel too much!!

Did we get hit??? How’s 28″! And more to come this week. I think it’s too late to move to the Bahama’s! But it makes me feel warmer. It took us 4 hrs to dig 400ft of tunnels to care for the barnyard animals. How bout next time you take it all?

Fabulous. Hope the snow survey in the Sierras is measuring in feet not inches. We really need the snow.

I was so hoping we would. I grew up in Ontario so a few feet at a time are the norm. We live in the Pocono’s (NE PA) and we got nuthin’. I’m pretty disappointed. Winter is so… brown, here..

I live in Houston. No snow since Dec 6. Before that, no snow since Dec 2008. Before that, no snow since 2004.

    Hahahhahahahahaha!

Summers are a bitch, though. :)
