L is for ____________

August 15th, 2011

LOYAL – I’m a loyal friend and customer. If I like your product I will tell everyone about it and most likely purchase it for the rest of my life. I’ll defend my friends fiercely and help them in any way that I can.

LIST MAKER – I make lists for everything, there’s something quite satisfying about crossing things off of your to-do list. Sometimes I even add things that weren’t on there, simply so I can cross it off. I always make lists of things I need when I head to the health food store or the farmer’s market – but I promptly lose the list and can never find them when I need them.

LONE RANGER – as an introvert, I need lots of time alone in order to recharge, especially after a social situation or being out and about. That’s probably why I love the solitude of gardening!

LAID BACK – I’m pretty laid back about a lot of things in my life. I find it makes life more enjoyable when you don’t worry about every little detail.

LOW MAINTENANCE – especially for a woman. I don’t wear make up, jewelry, perfume, or own a pair of high heels or panty hose. I don’t even comb my hair, it gets washed twice a week and when I get out of the shower it goes into a ponytail.

LOVE LIFE – I love life. I find that trying to learn from your mistakes and focusing on enjoying the season you’re in (whether good or bad) make for a very enjoyable life.

I’m loving your pictures! I’m a list maker too, but I have to admit – a late night and lack of caffeine so far this morning made me read the “i” in “list” as “u”…. :)

I used to wash my hair about 5-6 times a week, my hair was always alternating between greasy and frizzy. It was a terrible cycle I got into. I think you should try weening yourself off everyday shampoo. It’s been a long time since I had to wash my hair that frequently. Your scalp will be greasy at first, but it will eventually compensate over time and stop producing oils as quickly. Now I wash my hair about once a week. My hair isn’t greasy until day five or six, when I start using dry shampoo until I give up and wash my hair. I originally start washing less when i dyed my hair all manner of crayola colors as a teenager. I wanted to not re-dye constantly. When I briefly had dreads, I finally went to once a week washings and when I got rid of the dreads I kept the habit.

Everyone’s hair is different, but since I transitioned to less frequent washings I’ve noticed the following: growing my hair long is much easier, less breakage, less shampoo, less frizz and less of that annoying feeling of having greasy hair the same stupid day you washed it, and I pretty much have abandoned all frizz managing products that led to me feeling like I needed to wash my hair everyday.

Two things you need to know to use a fraction of the shampoo your used to. One, use a dry shampoo! Whats a dry shampoo you ask? Well you probably have some at home right now. Cornstarch (what I use) and baby powder both make excellent dry shampoos. To use, sprinkle into your hair when it is greasy, and let it hang out for a bit so the oils can absorb the powder. Then brush it out and style as usual. I have a little mason jar I hammered some holes into the lid to make sprinkling easier.
The second tip I can give is, don’t use hot water on your hair. It is damaging to hair and personally I’ve noticed it makes my hair so much greasier. If I use hot water, I can’t get away with once a week shampooing.

The products I currently use: cornstarch, toning shampoo (hey, i can afford it since I only buy a bottle a year), conditioner. No more gel, no hairspray or serums. If I feel fancy (rarely, I’m so lazy with my hair, why do you think I don’t wash it? lol) I have a leave in conditioner I use before any method of heat of my hair. I don’t even regularly use my hair dryer, I usually air dry unless it’s during of 14 day long winters. If I didn’t use the flat iron or blow dryer for the rare night out, I wouldn’t even need the leave-in conditioner.

Also, another frugal green hair tip: olive oil is where it’s all. Feel your hair becoming kentucky fried extra crispy? 1/2 of warm olive oil in your hair, it feels gross I know. Leave your hair wrapped in a towel, leave it in at least 45 mins, if you need it bad, leave it in all night. Shampoo it one to two times and bam! You just saved yourself a trip to the store to buy V05 hot oil. Enjoy your sexy hair! (NOT A PROTEIN CONDITIONER! If you need a protein conditioner after heavy processing, please use that.)

Susy, I’m so envious of you for not having to brush your hair everyday. My hair forms “rats nests” after about a day and a half! I gotta keep on top of my mane or it turns into one giant beaver tail dreadlock.

I’d highly recommend trying some clear henna to help with the rats nests. Clear henna conditions the hair making it so much softer and less prone to getting all knotted up. Of course you could use colored henna if you want some color in your hair. I use organic henna from Mt Rose Herbs.

Oh, what nice L’s. I am definitely low maintenance and a list maker. I listed N for notebook – for my list maker stuff. My L’s were Locks (locking doors), Lake and Limestone. I find I am not using a lot of words that describe me, but more words that have an association to things around me that conger up stories or memories. Emily

The nylons were filled with rock salt to put over the ice dams on our gutters. Thought I should clarify that.
