Jawdroppingly LARGE

June 29th, 2013

Yesterday evening, we went out to a friend’s house to check out his Tamworth pigs.  This is a breed I’ve been considering raising, as I read they do very well when pastured in the forest.
Tamworth Pigs 1
This big guy weighed in around 600 or 650, although Tamworth boars can grow to 850. It was jawdroppingly LARGE when he came out of his hut.
Tamworth Pigs 2
The lady weighs in at around 300 and is currently pregnant and expecting piglets in August.
Tamworth Pigs 3
Thankfully, because of Nina from Ruit Farm I have found a breeder that lives only a few miles from us. In the future we hope to raise a few different types of hogs in search of our favorite breed. These guys were definitely impressive, but it does get me thinking about Guinea Hogs which are a smaller breed.

What’s the most impressive farm animal you’ve ever been around?

I have a friend nearby who raises Guinea Hogs. They are easy keepers on pasture and fairly easy to handle.

We are going to try pigs for the first time and I have 2 tamworths on order. Should be ready in a few weeks. Can’t wait!
We used to have a bull that was probably greater than 2000#. He was a gentle giant though. We had to get rid of him because he was so big he would rip up the barn by just leaning against things or scratching his head.

The farm animails that I grew up with here in the Caribbean and have always been impressed with them are rabbits, goats, guinea birds and turkeys. I hoping to growing rabbits and goats in the future. My neighbor nanny gave birth to two beauties two weeks ago.
    Rain, rain, rain this morning!

We had huge bulls growing up…but I guess I would also have to say a Clydesdale.

I was always afraid of my grandparents pigs when I was little. The hen house was in the middle of the pig enclosure and it was our job to collect eggs. Later my dad and one of my uncles made my ride a pig even though I did not want to. I fell more because I didn’t want to than I couldn’t hold on. When I was a teenager my other uncle hurt his back when his boar charged him and hit the truck my uncle was standing on hard enough to make him fall.

I think smaller pigs are more my style. Although my sister had a very aggressive ram you couldn’t turn your back on. He would rear up and pummel you on the back and shoulders with his front legs.

The largest farm animal I’ve been around were my uncles buffaloes.. They’re pretty mammoth!
My grandfather also had some giant bulls and I’ve been around quite a few really large breed work horses..

We just got a bunch of new pigs in and 2 of them are purebred tamworths. They are some good looking pigs. I’m interested to compare the taste of them versus the purebred Berkshire and Berkshire/tamworth cross that we have raised in the past.

We also got two guinea hogs. They are fabulous! So tame and docile. I really like hanging with them. They will just roll over and let you scratch their belly. We are planning to begin breeding them once they come of age.
