Favorite Places

May 10th, 2014

I’ve visited a lot of greenhouses in my day, small mom and pop places that specialize in rare plants propagated right on the farm and giant super store type places with so many plants you could never see every single one.  Back in Ohio I have my favorite spots to visit each year, I have yet to visit a lot of greenhouses in Maine, but I’m working on it.  I did visit Snug Harbor last year and I went again earlier this week.

This place is wonderful, it’s small and yet there are so many wonderful things nestled into the space. There are dovecots, chicken coops, peacocks, greenhouses, espaliered trees, hedges, ponies and so many wonderful succulents.

There’s also this lovely birdbath there that I keep eyeing whenever I get to visit. I have no idea where I could put it in my not yet organized garden so I haven’t purchased it yet. Though I must admit, I was tempted to get it earlier this week.

This place is just my kind of place, it’s exactly the kind of garden I want, not too formal, not too messy – perfectly imperfect. This place is an inspiration to me, I get so many ideas whenever I visit.

Do you have a place you like to visit to get inspiration for your garden?

Sorry, should be too “many” not “make”.

What a wonderful place! I especially love the old buildings. Like you, this is my kind of place. We have gone to home and garden shows for some ideas, some of which we still plan to use. But I really love the small places. They make the most of small places, have beautiful layouts and plant varieties.

Susy, there is a place that I like to buy my plants from when I buy them. It’s over river and through the woods. Well, it’s on the other side of the Missouri river and is a locally owned nursery that been around for I think three generations. They have a huge inside area with thousands of plants for my purchase. They have every kind of seed imaginable and some are in the old fashioned tip out bulk bins. Barrels of seed potatoes wait for purchase close to the cash register. There’s a small fish pond and a waterfall with a few seats to sit and check your seed list for a few minutes. I just love the earthy smell that comes from the mixture of the waterfall and garden dirt from all the plants. It emulates the smell that comes after a nice Spring rain.

Have a great nursery favorite places day.

What a gorgeous nursery! I love the old shed with all the pots lined up on the shelves! And yes, I too am glad I don’t live nearby (well sort of), as I would probably go broke! :)
PS. Go back and get that birdbath before it’s gone! :)

What a treasure! So many things to see, I’ll bet you could take all day and not see everything. Hoping that bird bath finds its way to you.
