Lovely Alyssum

July 2nd, 2015

Ever since I was a wee little lass, I’ve loved alyssum. It’s always had a spot in my garden and it always will. There’s something about this little flower that I adore, it’s perfect in just about every way. Generally I buy my plants at a the local greenhouse since I’ve never had much luck starting it from seed. That never stops my from trying, each year I buy a pack of seed and give it another try.
This is ‘Gulf Winds’ alyssum from Renee’s Garden and I’m a huge fan of the color mix. Usually I buy plain white, but this mix is perfection. Last night I transplanted them around the garden, filling in holes where I harvested lettuce or where other plants died. I’ll definitely be trying this variety once again next year.

Have you had an annual that you’ve loved for your entire life? Do you still grow it in the garden?

Susy, I turned over the page to a new month on the calendar. I said goodbye to Tara and hello to what looks like a peony and some black eye Susan (my favorite plant). I’m still in process about flowers. I have mastered planting the the “Poor Man’s Living Patio” but that’s about as far as I go with flowers. Every year is going to be the year of more flowers but it just doesn’t seem to happen as the gardening year unfolds. My favorite flowers are hollyhocks, black eyed Susan, and really any thing purple. In Nebraska Alyssum is planted in the cracks and crevasses of rock walls. It seems to thrive well in that environment and beautify the wall with it’s display of flowers. The beautification of using living flowers is a great way to bring nature into a landscape, don’t you think?

Have a great alyssum planting day.

My favorite, life long annual has to be Alyssum too! I just simply love it! You couldn’t of said it better my sentiments regarding Alyssum…
I think my love affair with it is because it was the go to annual that my mother and grandmother planted in the midwest and just one whiff of it’s intoxicating scent takes me back to my childhood in Michigan. I love it underplanted in my rose bed and just anywhere it likes to go!
Luckily mine re-seeds itself here in the Pacific Northwest and it’s a great plant for the tiny pollinators.
It’s just such a sweet plant…hence I guess the name Sweet Alyssum! :)
