Getting Things In Before the Frost

October 17th, 2017

It was supposed to get down to 30 last night. That means that I spent yesterday afternoon harvesting the remaining pumpkins, covering semi-tender items with frost blankets, harvesting the remaining peppers and tomatoes, and harvesting some of my lemongrass. One of the plants was dug up to be overwintered in the basement, the rest will mostly likely end up in the freezer or in jars of red curry.

I love lemongrass and I love curry, which is why I grew lemongrass. The only problem is that I need to get down to Portland to get a few ingredients for my curry paste, they aren’t readily available here in the midcoast region. I’m really looking forward to having homemade red curry paste, both for my pantry and for gifting. Thai curry is one of my favorite meals, it goes so well with all manner of vegetables, especially those from the freezer. Here’s hoping I can get to the city this week to get all the supplies I need.

What are you harvesting this week and what are you planning on doing with it?

This week was potato storing. Most are in the basement storage area and some are canned for making soup this Winter. I love soup of any kind but potato soup is one of my favorites.

Have a great last harvest day in the garden.

Here in northern Minnesota we’ve already had a frost, so I’ve brought in the onions and carrots . The onions are on the counter to finish drying. This wasn’t a particularly good year for heat-loving crops. Too many nights in the 50s. I bought some buckwheat seed to plant, but thought I’d waited too long. I’m used to gardening in zone 5, now we’re in zone 3. It’s definitely been a learning curve.

Your toast comment sounds like my husband and I. I don’t want mine burnt, but I do like it dark. I tell him his is just warm bread!

Love your tool holder, by the way.

I picked my last peppers yesterday. We’ve had three or four frosts so far – I can’t believe that you, being further inland and higher up, haven’t yet! I need to dig up my rosemary and bring it inside tonight.

If you want a pal to go to Portland with, I’d love to go down with you some Friday… I would like to visit my ex-foster horse Buddy while I’m there, and make a trip to Trader Joe’s. I’m open to anything else!

Harvesting tomatoes this week. I must say, I prefer springtime to harvest time, but there is nothing like enjoying the fruits of our labors. I really love pumpkin and pumpkin pies this time of year.
