Fall Crops

November 9th, 2017

Our temperatures are finally getting down in to the twenties, this Friday night it’s supposed to be in the teens. With the persephone period at hand, crops aren’t growing any more, just sustaining. That means it’s time to harvest various crops that can be affected by the cold weathers. The day before yesterday I harvested lots of things: cauliflower, broccoli, lettuce, and fennel. The lemongrass will be harvested today, along with a few other greens.

I’m amazed at how well my fall crops produced this year. If I had planted them a month before I did, they would have done much better, but overall I’m quite pleased. The cauliflower is the size of a small cantaloupe, the broccoli has headed up nicely. The fennel is small, but tender. The butterhead lettuces produced nice small heads, the spinach is perfect for harvest. Overall, I’m very happy with my fall harvest. Each year I get better and better with gardening throughout the seasons. Succession planting is becoming easier and easier.

What are you harvesting this week from the garden?

All I have left are arugula and kale… those should be okay for a while though, despite the freezing temperatures.

Susy, harvesting is over here in Nebraska. Frosty mornings are the norm with a high of 36 (wind chill in the 20s) for today. The ground is not frozen just yet so I’m able to still do garden cleanup but that day is coming soon when above freezing will not happen during the day time.

How do you store the lettuce and other greens when they are harvested at the end of the season?

Have the best day that you can. Ha, I had to look up the meaning for persephone period. Still not to old to learn something new every day.

I’m still getting cucumbers and some pumpkins. Hoping I can get my fall tomatoes to really start producing soon. Greens are starting to be harvested here and there, too.

I was hoping to leave them til Thanksgiving, but I’m thinking it’s time to pull the brussels sprouts – the leaves are looking sad. Should I freeze them until next week’s feast?

They should be fine, just cut the stalks and store them in a cool place.
