Not Quite…

March 21st, 2016

Well, spring is officially here….but not quite. It was beautiful yesterday, high of around 40 and sunny. We spent the day working outside, getting a few chores done.

We’re supposed to wake up this morning to snow, more than a dusting. We shall see how much we really get, thankfully it brings some nitrogen for the garden. It will also give me at least another week of time in the sewing room.

What’s the weather like in your garden?

Quite a Swing

On Monday morning it was -19 outside – BRRRRRR.

Yesterday afternoon it was 50, that’s quite a swing in temperatures. We had snow switching to rain, boy did that make a mess of the roads and our driveway. I’m always amazed at nature when things like this happen.

What’s the weather like in your neck of the woods?

Friday Favorite: Snow

February 5th, 2016

After being in the mid-fifties on Thursday, we woke up to snow covering the ground and a forecast of 3-6″ to fall during the day.

While I do love spring and appreciate it, I enjoy winter as well. Snow is vital to our gardens, it provide nitrogen and moisture for spring plantings. It protects our perennials with an insulating blanket. We will still get more snow in the weeks to come, winter isn’t even close to being over. I’m certainly going to relish these last few weeks of winter and hopefully will be able to get in a lot of snowshowing!

Do you get snow in your garden? When do you typically get your last snow?

Still Waiting…

December 23rd, 2015

So far this year we’ve only had a few inches of snow, that all melted weeks ago, the ground is still bare.

I can’t say that I’m eager for a rerun of last winter, we got over 12 feet of snow, but I am ready to have a blanket of the white stuff brightening up these dark days.
SNOW
There’s no snow in the forecast for at least the next week. No doubt it will come, there are many years we don’t have snow until Jan, I’m just hoping it’s a more “normal” winter, that is if there is a normal when it comes to weather.

Do you live in an area with snow? Do you have any yet?

Finally Here

November 25th, 2015

We woke up Monday morning to an inch and a half of snow. It was beautiful, though I had a few chores that were more difficult because of the snow. I’m already loving how nicely the boxwood looks in the winter, the structure it adds is just what I was hoping for.

With the snow came the cold weather, temperatures are starting to dip down into the teens at night. The duck pond needs a heater, as does the waterer in the chicken coop.

This time of year, the freezing of the ground makes me move on towards other winter chores, mostly cleaning out chicken/duck coops and getting them set up for the winter. I’m always thankful for the lovely nutrient rich mulch provided by this chore. Usually it’s used on a newer area in the garden. It makes a fantastic week free bed come spring. After these chores I’m finally finished up for the year with a few weeks to spare, now it’s time to plan next year!

What end of the year chores are you finishing up?
